Modern greenhouse film does far more than keep rain off. It manages light, temperature, humidity, UV and condensation, which in turn affect photosynthesis, water use, pests, disease and yield. Choosing film should start with the conditions inside your greenhouse, not with the price per kilo.

Start with a performance brief

Before comparing films, write down the crop, planting density, greenhouse shape, temperature range, sun intensity, humidity, pest pressure, irrigation method, target film life and harvest period. The right film is the one that fixes the biggest limitation in that list.

1. Light management and diffused light

In dense crops, upper leaves are often saturated with light while lower leaves are starved. Diffusing film scatters sunlight so more of it reaches the middle and lower canopy.

Published trials on tomatoes and cucumbers have reported yield gains under diffusing film ranging from a few percent to the low double digits, depending on the crop, density and climate. Results are not automatic, and they depend on keeping total light transmission high: haze is only useful if the film still lets enough light through. Dust, ageing and condensation all reduce transmission over time.

Practical tip: trial a new film in two comparable bays. Record canopy light, leaf temperature, marketable yield per square metre and fruit defects while keeping everything else the same.

2. Temperature control and water efficiency

Those gains come from the whole system, not the film alone. Pair the right cover with efficient drip irrigation and good ventilation.

UV, heat, wind abrasion, sulfur-based chemicals and rough frame edges all shorten film life, so protect the investment at installation.

3. UV-blocking films and pest management

Many insects, including whitefly, thrips and aphids, use ultraviolet light to navigate and find host plants. Films that block UV below roughly 380 nm can disrupt this behaviour and reduce pest numbers inside the house.

They do not eliminate pests, and they can affect pollinators such as bumblebees, so check pollination under any UV-blocking film. Treat it as one layer of integrated pest management alongside insect netting, scouting and hygiene.

4. Anti-drip and anti-fog performance

Anti-drip additives spread condensation into a thin sheet that runs down the film instead of dripping onto plants. That keeps leaves drier, reduces fungal disease pressure and keeps more light coming through.

Coatings can wash off or degrade earlier than the film itself, while additives built into the film usually last longer. A label that simply says “anti-drip” is not enough: ask how long it lasts and under what conditions it was tested.

5. Material selection and lifecycle cost

MaterialTypical service lifeNotes
LDPE / PEAbout 1–2 yearsLowest cost; good for seasonal or budget projects
EVA blendsAbout 2–3+ yearsBetter flexibility and heat retention
PO multilayerAbout 3–5 yearsLongest life and most stable functions; higher price

Common thicknesses run from about 120 to 200 μm, but layer structure and resin quality matter more than thickness alone.

The cheapest film is often the most expensive one. A film that fails after 18 months can cost more in labour, downtime, crop risk and disposal than a four-year film. Compare cost per productive season, and always model a downside case, such as a smaller yield gain or a shorter life than promised.

Frequently asked questions

How much can greenhouse film increase yield?

It depends heavily on crop and conditions. Published diffusing-film trials show single-digit to low double-digit gains. Your own side-by-side trial is the most reliable guide.

Is higher light transmission always better?

No. In hot, high-sun regions, too much direct light overheats crops. Transmission, diffusion, spectrum and thermal control need to be balanced.

Can UV-blocking film replace pesticides?

No. It can reduce some pests but works only as part of integrated pest management.

LDPE, EVA or polyolefin: which should I choose?

LDPE suits low-cost, short-life use. EVA is a middle option. Polyolefin multilayer film suits longer life and multiple functions that justify a higher price.
