Mulch film thickness affects how easily the film lays, how it stands up to sun and wind, how much a roll weighs and what it costs per hectare. But thickness is only one part of the specification. Resin, colour, layer structure, additives, width and manufacturing tolerance can change performance at the same gauge. This guide explains how to choose.

Why thickness matters

Thickness influences handling, laying, cutting and field exposure, plus roll weight and material per square metre. That feeds into installation labour, transport costs and how consistent repeat orders are.

Start with the crop cycle and laying method

Define these before choosing a gauge:

A brief that says only “black mulch film” leaves too many questions open.

What thickness does and does not tell you

Handling and laying

The film must survive laying without tearing, over-stretching or edge damage. That also depends on resin formulation, elongation, winding quality, temperature, soil preparation and machine settings. Ask how thickness is measured and what tolerance applies.

Light and colour

Thickness alone does not decide how much light the film blocks. Colour and opacity matter just as much. Do not assume thicker film blocks more light; ask for opacity data if weed control is critical.

Outdoor exposure

UV stabilisation supports longer field life, but “UV resistant” is not a guaranteed lifespan, especially under strong equatorial sun. Write the expected covering period into your enquiry.

Compare film types before choosing a gauge

Black mulch film

Used where weed control and moisture retention matter most. A good default for many vegetables.

Clear mulch film

Lets more solar energy into the soil for faster warming. Weeds can grow underneath, so it suits specific goals rather than general weed control.

Silver-black film

A reflective upper surface over an opaque black lower surface. It keeps soil cooler than black film and the reflective side can help deter some insects. Confirm which side faces up.

Co-extruded film

Several layers with different roles, such as colour, opacity or strength. Ask the supplier to describe the layer structure and the tolerance across the whole film.

Biodegradable film

Chosen by crop duration, soil, climate and local disposal practice. A biodegradable label does not define breakdown timing in every field, so ask for formulation, intended use period and documentation.

Other specifications to confirm

Mulch film is commonly available from very thin gauges up to about 80 μm, in widths up to around 4 m and roll lengths such as 50, 100 or 200 m. Not every thickness is available in every size, so confirm before ordering.

A practical RFQ checklist

  1. Crop and planting schedule
  2. Covering period
  3. Laying method (hand or machine)
  4. Soil and weather conditions
  5. Colour or co-extruded structure
  6. Target thickness and tolerance
  7. Width, roll length and quantity
  8. UV and perforation needs
  9. Packaging and delivery location
  10. Sample and inspection requirements

Validate the thickness before a bulk order

Dealers should keep the approved sample and specification together with the product code. Pair mulch with drip irrigation for the biggest water savings, or see our vegetable cultivation solutions.

Frequently asked questions

What unit is mulch film thickness measured in?

Microns (μm) or millimetres (mm). Suppliers should state the method and tolerance so quotes can be compared fairly.

Is thicker mulch film always better?

No. The right gauge depends on crop cycle, laying method, field conditions, colour, UV needs and end-of-season handling. Extra thickness adds cost and weight without always solving the main problem.

Should black, clear and silver-black film use the same thickness?

Not automatically. Colour changes the film’s purpose, so evaluate colour, crop cycle, exposure and installation together.

How should I compare biodegradable mulch film?

Ask for formulation, intended use period, climate assumptions, documentation and end-of-season instructions.
